The Work on Lawyers

I. According to the Notice of the General Office of the State Council on Issuing the Provisions on the Main Functions, Internal Bodies and Staffing of the Ministry of Justice (No.64 [2008] of the General Office of the State Council), the Ministry of Justice is responsible for guiding and supervising the work of lawyers and notarization and for entrusting and managing lawyers from Hong Kong and Macao as notaries.

Specific Duties: The duties of the Lawyer and Notary Public Department are: guiding and supervising the implementation of laws, regulations and policies on lawyers; guiding and supervising the work of lawyers and law firms; licensing the practice of law by licensed lawyers; examining and approving as well as administering the offices law firms of foreign countries, Hong Kong or Macao in China or the mainland of China; guiding and supervising the branches of Chinese law firms in foreign countries; guiding and supervising the work of the legal advisers of enterprises and public institutions; and undertaking the specific work concerned in entrusting lawyers from Hong Kong and Macao as notaries.
